フライフィッシングで英会話

今日は、イギリスのRobie君のビデオを紹介します。彼はイギリス出身ですがニュージーランド釣行で良い思いをしたようです。今回の英語はイギリス英語で、しかも若者の英語なので今までとは異なる英語表現で聞きづらいかもしれません。しかし、これも英語です。様々な英語が聞けて英語の世界は広がります。

すごく大きな魚を掛けています。このビデオでは「でかい」と言う表現としてcracking, whopperと言う表現が出てきます。Burger Kingのハンバーガーでwhopper burgersというのがありますが確かにでかいですよね。これに対抗してMacのmega burgersがあります。あれも巨大です。魚にもでかければ、mega fishと言ってもよいでしょう。ほかに「でかい」という形容詞としてはmassive, humongous, gigantic, monster, mommoth, enormous, whackingなども使えます。big, large, hugeなどの基本形容詞も忘れないように。

New zealand monster fish　（ニュージーランドの巨大魚）

Robbie: Just spotted a cracking trout over there, he's feeding away, out early this morning and er I'm going to nip round there before he bugs off because he wont be there for long -- that's for sure.
ロビー：ちょうど、あそこに超でかトラウトをみつけたぞ。早朝、餌を食ってました。魚がずらかる前にいそいでもどります。なぜなら長くいないからね。それは、確かだよ。
Cracking: 超
Nip round: 急いで出かける
Bug off: ずらかる

Robbie: I've got a little pheasant tail on the end , a little Royal Wolf here, simply to see it, I'm not expecting a take on that. This is what we want a take on -- a good hook up on that. Lets go do it!
見れば分かるように、フェザントテールをトレーラーにして、ここにロイヤルウルフをつけます。そいつに食いつくことはないと思うけど。こっちに出て欲しいね。こっちだと針がよく入ると思うよ。じゃ、やりに行こう。

Olly: To catch this fish he's operating a plan of confusion. If he casts enough flies over, over a long enough period, perhaps it will get confused, fall asleep and float back into his hands.
この魚を取るのに、あいつは混乱作戦を行います。充分なフライをなんども投げれば、おそらく魚は混乱して、眠くなって、あいつの手中に入るって魂胆さ。

Olly: Here we are...
来ましたよ。
Olly: It looks to be a good fish.
良い魚だな。
Robbie: It's a whopper
でかいよ。
Whopper: 巨大なもの
Robbie: Whoooooooooo!

Olly: There he is.
そこにいるぞ
Olly: Just moving over the shallows there. Roaming up.
そこの浅いところを移動してるな。上の方にうろついてるな。
Roam: うろつく
Robbie: Just trying to keep him in the pool. If he goes out the back of the pool I'm in real trouble.
淵にいさせとくよ。淵の外に出ちゃったら、大変なことにあるよ。
Robbie: Whoooooo!

Olly: Dougie AKA 'the nose' enjoying this fight.
“鼻”というあだ名のDougieはファイトを楽しんでいます。

Robbie: He's working his way through the current.
流れの中苦戦しています。
Olly: He's got in behind the fish here trying to scare him up river to make the fish work in that current. If he goes down river he'll be in all sorts of trouble!
魚の裏にまわって魚を脅かして流れの中上に追いやろうとしています。下流に行ったら、大変なことになるぞ。
Olly: Some big rapids here.
大きな早瀬があるね。
Robbie: You can call the harbour master if he goes downstream.
下流に走られたら、魚主導になってしまうよ。
Olly: That's right (laughs)
その通り。
Robbie: I need to keep him in this pool.
淵に入れておこう。
Olly: Reaching for the net.
ネットに手をやった。
Olly: He's holding there pulsing in the current.
流れの中、魚はバクバクしながらそこでこらえているよ。
Robbie: He's tiring! I really don't want him to go downstream.
こいつは手ごわいな。魚に下流に行って欲しくないよ。
Olly: As the man says.... Tiring
ロビーが言うように、手ごわいやつです。
Robbie: He knows I'm here.
魚は俺の存在に気づいているよ。
Olly: Sure does.
もちろんだよ。
Olly: Look at the bend in that rod -- wow!
竿の曲がりを見てくれよ。スゲー。
Olly: Running towards.
こっちの方に来るぞ。
Robbie: Shit!
クソッ
Olly: Have you..... you lost him?
ばれちゃったか？
Olly: Oh and he's netted him like a bear!!!
オー、熊みたいに魚を網に入れた。
(laughs and screams)
Robbie: How about that baby!
このベイビーをどう思うよ。
Olly: Woooooooooo!
ウェー
Robbie: Hahah that's cheating!
ははは、冗談だよ。
Olly: Look at this, see this is the face of a bad loser.
こいつを見な。これが往生際の悪いやつの顔だよ。
Robbie: I'm a bad loser!
俺が往生際が悪いんじゃん。
Olly: Now that is a big fish!
さて、でかい魚だな。
Olly: Good hold it up for the camera
よし、カメラに向けて持ち上げて。
Robbie: He was going out the back of the pool and the tail fly caught on my leg and whipped the fly out of his mouth.
淵から出かけて、ドロッパーのフライが俺の脚に刺さって、フライが口から外れていたよ。
Olly: Hold the fish, quick you’re still on (camera). Just in the net even. This one’ss going to be returned to water. Beautiful fish. Dougie aware of the importance of a quick catch and release. But, we've got this one on camera so we will do a quick little photo shot!
魚を抱け。まだカメラに写っているから。まだネットに入れておけ。後でリリースしよう。きれいだな。ドギーはＣ＆Ｒの大切さを知っている。けど、カメラに入っているから、小さい写真を後で撮れる。
Robbie: You got it. Got the photo?
撮れたかい。写真とれたか？
Olly: Any final words on this video?
