We do not think that in any form it can be accepted; for it always leads
to the adoption of the view, that the later writer sometimes willfully
altered his model by introducing changes of real gravity, at other times
adopted the course of copying with the utmost literalness, and that
while frequently applying these two opposite methods in one and the
same verse; and, finally, at still other times, that he made the text which
he used undergo a multitude of modifications which are ridiculous by
reason of being insignificant.

は、真の重要性が変化したという理由で故意に彼の型を作り変え、また他の

Let any one consult a Synopsis, and the thing will be obvious.

Is it psychologically conceivable that serious, believing writers, convinced
of the supreme importance of the subject of which they were treating,
adopted such methods with regard to it; and, above all, that they applied
them to the reproduction of the very teaching of the Lord Jesus?---Common
as, even at the present day, this manner of explaining the relation between
our three Gospels is, we are convinced that Criticism will finally renounce
it as a moral impossibility.

真剣な信仰のある著者たちは、彼らが取り扱っている主題のこの上ない重要

The simple and natural solution of the problem appears to us to be indicated
by the book of Acts, in the passage where it speaks to us of the ‘teaching
of the apostle,’ as one of the foundations on which the Church of Jerusalem
was built (ii. 42).

この問題の単純で自然な解決は、使徒行伝によって私たちに示唆されている
ように見えます。「使徒の教え」についてそれが私たちに語っている節にお

In this primitive apostolic teaching, the accounts of the life and death of
Jesus surely occupied the first place.

These narratives, daily repeated by the apostles, and by the evangelists
instructed in their school, must speedily have taken a form more or less
fixed and settled, not only as to the tenor of each account, but also as to
the joining together of several accounts in one group, which formed
ordinarily the subject-matter a single teaching.

これらの物語は、毎日使徒たちによって繰り返され、また福音伝道者によっ
て学校で教えられたので、急速に固定化され、決定されたに相違ありません。
主旨だけでなく、幾つかの話が各々一つの組になりました。その組が通常

What we here affirm is not a pure hypotheses. St. Luke tells us, in the
preface of his Gospel (the most ancient document respecting this subject
which we possess), of the first written accounts of the evangelic facts
as composed “according to the story which they transmitted to us who
were witnesses of them from the beginning, and who became ministers
of the Word.”

ここで私たちが断言していることは、単なる仮説ではありません。聖ルカ
は彼の福音書(これはこの主題に関する、私たちが有している最も古い文

These witnesses and first ministers can only have been apostles. Their
accounts conveyed to the Church by oral teaching had passed, therefore,
just as they were, into the writings of those who first wrote them out.

The pronoun ‘us’ employed by Luke, shows that he ranked himself among
the writers who were instructed by the oral testimony of the apostles.

ルカが使った代名詞「我々」は、彼自身が使徒たちの口頭での証言によって
教えられた著者たちの一人であることを示しています。

Then, we shall enter upon the study itself, which will include the
following subjects:
1.　　The life of the apostle to whom the fourth Gospel is generally
　　　ascribed.
2.　　The analysis and distinctive characteristics of this writing.
3.　　The circumstances of its composition
　　　Its date;
　　　The place of its origin;
　　　Its author;
　　　The aim which the author pursued in composing it.

After having studied each of these points, as separately as possible from
one another, we shall bring together the particular results thus obtained
in a general view, which, if we have not taken a wrong path, will offer
the solution of the problem.

これらの点を一つ一つ、できる限り別々に研究した後、このようにして得
られた個々の結果をまとめて、全体図を構成します。その全体図は、もし
私たちが誤った道をたどらなければ、問題を解決するものとなるでしょう。

Jesus has promised to His Church the Spirit of truth to lead it into all
the truth. It is under the direction of his guide that we place ourselves.

イエスは彼の教会に、真理の霊が教会をすべての真理に導くと約束されま

A GLANCE AT THE FORMATION OF THE GOSPEL LITERATURE
福音文学一瞥

Our first three Gospels certainly have a common origin, not only in
that all three relate one and the same history, but also by reason of the
fact that an elaboration of this history, of some sort, was already in
existence at the time of their composition, and has stamped with a
common impress the three narratives.

最初の三つの福音書は、確かに共通する源泉を有しています。三福音書
全てが同一の歴史を語るだけでなく、この歴史の何らかの綿密な仕上げ
が三福音書成立の時にすでに存在していたのです。そしてその語り口に
同じような特徴を刻み込みました。

Indeed, the striking agreement between them which is easily observed
both in the general plan and in certain series of identical accounts,
and finally in numerous clauses which are found exactly the same in
two of these writings, or in all the three---this general renders it impossible
to question that, before being thus recorded, the history of Jesus had
already been cast in a mold where it had received the more or less
fixed form in which we find it in our three narratives.

実に全体計画においても、またある一連の同じ話においても、これら二つ
の記述または三つの記述のすべてで容易に見られる驚くべき一致、そして
最後に、これらの文書の二つまたは三つにおいて、数多くの節が全く同一

Many think that this primitive gospel type consisted of a written document---
either one of our three Gospels, of which the other two were only a free
reproduction, or one or even two writings, now lost, from which our
evangelists, all three of them, drew.

この福音の原型は、文書で構成されていたと考える人は多い。三つの福音
書の中のいずれか一つがそうで、他の二つはそれに拘束されない複製品に
過ぎないか、または今では失われた一つないし二つの原型があり、そこか
ら私たちの福音記者は三つすべてを引き出したと考えるのです。

This hypothesis of written sources has been, and is still presented under
the most varied forms.

書かれた源泉というこの仮説は、今まで多様な形式で提出されてきて、今
も提出されています。

To attain this object, or, at least, to approach it as nearly as possible,
Criticism makes use of two sorts of means: 1. Those which it borrows
from the history, and especially from the literary history, of the time
which witnessed the publication of the sacred writings, or which followed
it; 2. Those which it derives from the book itself.

この目的を達成するために、または少なくとも目的にできる限り近づく
ために、批評は二種類の方法を用います。１．聖なる文書の公刊を目撃
した時代またはその直後の時代の歴史から、特に文学史から借りるもの。
２．その本自体に由来するもの。

Among the former we rank, first of all, the positive statement which
Jewish or Christian antiquity has transmitted to us respecting the
composition of one or another of our Bible writings; then, the quotations
or reminiscences of any passages of these books, which are met with
in subsequent writers, and which prove their existence and influence
at certain date; finally, the historical facts to which these writings have
stood in the relation of cause or effect. These are the ‘external’ data.

前者の中に、私たちは第一にユダヤ教またはキリスト教の古代遺物が、
私たちの聖書の一部に関して私たちに伝えてくれた断言を第一に置きま

To the second class belong all the indications, contained in the book
itself, respecting the person of its author, and respecting the circum-
stances in which he labored and the motive which impelled him to
write. These are the ‘internal’ data.

第二種類には本そのものに含まれている全てのしるしが属します。著者
である人間に関するしるし、著者が書いている環境、そして著者が書い
た動機または書かせるように強いた事情、これらは内部的データです。

To combine these two classes of data, for the purpose of drawing from
them, if possible, a harmonious result---such is the work of Criticism.

This is the task which we undertake with regard to one of the most
important book of the New Testament and the whole Bible.

Luther is reported to have said that if a tyrant succeeded in destroying
the Holy Scriptures and only a single copy of the Epistle to the Romans
and of the Gospel of John escaped him, Christianity would be saved.

ルターはこう言ったと言われています。もし専横君主が聖書を破壊する
ことに成功したとしても、ローマ人への手紙とヨハネの福音書だけがそ
の難を免れたとしたら、キリスト教は生き残るであろうと。

He spoke truly; for the fourth Gospel presents the object of the Christian
faith in its most perfect splendor, and the Epistle to the Romans describes
the way of faith which leads to the object, with an incomparable clearness.

彼は真実を語りました。なぜなら、第四福音書はキリスト教信仰の目的
を最も完全な輝きの中に提示しており、ローマ人への手紙は、比類のな
い明晰さで、キリスト教信仰の目的に至る信仰の道について語っている

What need of more to preserve Christ to the world and to give birth
ever anew to the Church?

キリストを世にとどめ、教会に新たな誕生を与えるために、他にもっ
と何が必要でしょうか。

The following will be the course of our study. After having cast a
general glance at the formation of our Gospel literature, we shall trace
the course of the discussions relative to the composition of the fourth
Gospel. These will be the subjects of two preliminary chapters.

次に私たちの研究の進路を述べます。私たちの福音文学の構成を一瞥
した後、第四福音書の構成に関する討論の経過をたどりましょう。それ

　　　Preliminaries (序文)

Every book is a mystery of which the author alone has the secret.
The preface may, no doubt, lift a corner of the veil; but there are
books without a preface, and the writer may not tell the whole truth.

どの本にも著者しか知らない秘密があります。序文は間違いなく、その
ヴェールの一隅を上げるでしょう。しかし、序文の無い本もあります。
そして著者は事実のすべてを告げないかも知れません。

It belongs to literary criticism, as it is understood at the present day,
to solve the problem offered to the world by every work which is
worthy of attention. For a book is not fully intelligible except so
far as the obscurity of its origin is dissipated.

それは文芸批評に属することです。現代では、世に供された、注目に値
する問題を解くのは、文芸評論だと理解されています。なぜなら、その
源泉の難解さがすり潰されていない限り、その本は十分に明瞭ではない
からです。

The science which is commonly called “Sacred Criticism” or “Introduction
to the Old and the New Testament ” was instituted by the Church, to
fulfill this task with regard to the books which contain the object of its
faith and the standards of its development.

通常「聖なる批評」とか「旧約および新約聖書序論」と呼ばれる科学は、
旧約聖書及び新約聖書に関して、この仕事を果たすために教会によって
制度化されました。旧約及び新約聖書には、その信仰の目的と発展の基

By placing in a clear light the origin of each one of these writings and
thus revealing its primal thought, it has as its office to shed upon their
whole contents the ray of light which illumines their minutest details.

明らかにすることにより、それら全部の内容の上に、それらの詳細の細
部を照らす光線を放つ役目をもっています。

According to Schleiermacher, the ideal of Sacred Criticism consists in
putting the present reader in the place of the original reader, by
procuring for him through the artifice of science, the preliminary
knowledge which the latter, as a matter of course, possessed.

シュライエルマッハーによると、「聖なる批評」の理想は、科学の工夫
により、初期の読者が当然有していた予備的知識を獲得し、それを現代
の読者に与えて、現代の読者を初期の読者の場所に置くことにあります。

However valuable a result like this may be, it seems to me that criticism
should propose to itself a yet more elevated aim.

このような結果がどれほど価値のあるものであろうとも、批判はもっと
高い目的を持つべきであろうと思われます。

Its true mission is to transport the reader into the very mind of the author,
at the time when he conceived or elaborated his work, at the time when
he conceived or elaborated his work, and to cause him to be presents
at the composition of the casting of a bell, and who, after having beheld
the metal in a state of fusion in the furnace, sees the torrent of fire flow
into the mold in which it is to receive its permanent form.

その真の使命は、著者が仕事を思いついたり推敲したりした時に、読者
を著者の心の中へ運び込むことです。また、鐘の鋳物を作るときに、そ
の場にいさせることです。そしてその金属が炉の中で溶解しているのを
見た後に、金属が火花を散らしながら、鋳型に流れ込んで鐘が完成した
形を与えられるのを見させることです。

This ideal includes that of Schleiermacher. For one of the essential
elements present to the mind of the author at the time when he prepares
his work, is certainly the idea which he forms of his readers, and of
their condition and wants.

この理想にはシュライエルマッハーの理想も含まれています。なぜなら、
著者が仕事の準備をしているときに彼の心に浮かぶ必須の要素の一つは、
確かに、彼が読者について描く像であり、彼らの状態と欲求だからです。

To identify oneself with him is, therefore, at the same time to identify
oneself with them.

したがって自分を著者と同一化することは、同時に著者が自分を読者た
ちと同一化することなのです。

(解説)
The 150th psalm is a psalm of thanks written first of all the people
of Israel to praise God.

詩篇第150篇は、感謝の詩篇であり、イスラエルの民が神を讃美するため
に最初に書かれたものです。

For them His sanctuary---the firmament of His might, that is, His
dwelling place, heaven, and castle---was in Jerusalem.

彼らにとって神の聖所――神の道からの蒼穹、つまり神の住居、天、そし
て宮――はエルサレムにありました。

Here also He showed His might with miracles and received the string
music and the songs of the Jews, with which their praise and worship
was accompanied.

ここで神はその御力を奇跡によって示され、弦楽器による音楽と、ユダヤ
人の歌をお受けになりました。それと共に彼らの讃美と礼拝が行われまし
た。

But for the Christian, preaching and the Gospel are our string music
and worship.

しかしクリスチャンにとっては、説教と福音とが私たちの音楽と礼拝です。

Note that all psalms of thanks are nothing but promises for the poor,
troubled conscience, saying as much as this: God is gracious and gladly
forgives all sins and will give all comfort, so that we may find all blessings
and comfort in Him.

感謝の詩篇はみな、貧しい人たち、良心が咎めている人たちにとって約束
以外の何ものでもありません。その約束とは、神は慈悲深く、すべての罪
を赦し、すべての慰めを与えてくださるので、私たちは神のうちにすべて
の祝福と慰めを見出すであろうというものです。

Therefore, this is openly a psalm of thanks and, at the same time,
secretly a psalm of comfort---yes, even a psalm of instruction and a
prophecy.

それだから、表面的には感謝の詩篇ですが、同時に裏では慰めの詩篇です。
そしてまた教えの詩篇であるとともに、預言でもあります。

All in one, it proclaims God’s grace and teaches us to trust and believe
in Him.

すべてが一つになって、この詩篇は、神の御恵みを宣言し、神を信用し、
神を信じるように私たちに教えています。

To this, may the same merciful God help us---our King and Lord,
Jesus Christ, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit is praised forever.
Amen.

そのために、同じ慈愛に満ちた神が私たちを助けてくださいますように。
私たちの王であり、主であるイエス・キリストが御父と聖霊と共に永久に
讃美されますように。アーメン。

Lord, our God, we yield to You most hearty thanks for this Book of
Psalms You gave us by Your servant David.

主、私たちの神様、あなたがその僕(しもべ)ダビデによって私たちに与え
てくださったこの詩篇の書について、私たちは心からの感謝を捧げます。

Grant that the reading of them may not have been in vain. Let it
make a lasting impression on our hearts, that we may be strengthened
in faith, and settled in our hope.

この詩篇を読むことが空しいことでなかったことを望んでいます。詩篇を
読んだことが、私たちの心にいつまでも続く印象を残しますように。また

Keep us steadfast in Jesus Christ until we enter into the inheritance of

(解説)
The 149th psalm is a psalm of thanks for the blessing that God is
gracious and merciful to His people, that they know they have a
gracious God, and that they rightly should rejoice.

詩篇第149篇は、神がご自分の民に対して恵み深くまた慈悲深いという恩
恵への感謝の詩篇です。彼らは自分たちには恵み深い神がおられることを
知っており、彼らが大いに喜ぶのは当然のことなのです。

They have this blessing or grace---which is rightly called the forgiveness
of sins---that God will not avenge how evil and sinful they are.

彼らはこの祝福または恩恵を有しています。それは正しく罪の赦しと呼ぶ
べきものです。つまり神は彼らがどれほど悪く、また罪深くてもそれに仕
返しされないのです。

Therefore, this psalm in reality belongs in the New Testament. It
calls itself a new song to the King of Zion, whom they should praise on
their couches, that is, in the church where they come together.
(Similarly, Isaiah called the churches and altars, in which Israel
committed fornication---that is, idolatry---couches or beds.)

それゆえこの詩篇は実際には新約聖書に属しています。この詩篇は自らを
シオンの王への新しい歌と呼んでいます。この王を彼らはカウチの上で讃

Again, it belongs to the New Testament to have a sharp sword in hand
to punish the heathen, to throw kings in stock and dungeons, and to
take vengeance, as it is written.

鋭い剣を手に持って異教徒を罰し、王たちをさらし台や牢獄に投げ込み、
復讐することも、新約聖書に書かれているとおり、新約聖書に属します。

This is the vengeance that is spoken of in the Scriptures, that Abraham’s
seed should strike down idolatry in all the world through the Gospel,
the spiritual sword, taking prisoner all the holiness of the kings and
the wise and subject them to Christ, as Paul says in 2 Corinthians 10: 5.

The 148th psalm is a psalm of thanks that excites and exhorts all
creatures in heaven and earth to praise God---especially His saints,
the children of Israel, who worship Him, that is, have His Word and
worship.

詩篇第148篇は、感謝の詩篇です。この詩篇は、天上と地上にいる全ての
生物を興奮させ、神を賛美するように熱心に勧めるものです。特に神の聖
徒たち、イスラエルの子孫たち、神を礼拝する者たち、つまり神の御言葉
をもち、崇拝する者たちを鼓舞しています。

And note that this psalm confirms all the stations of life---kings,
judges, old, young.

All are created by God and are good and honorable. For if the office
of king or of judge were evil and not God-given, one could not in such
an office praise God.

れたものでなければ、そのような地位・役職に就いている者は、神を賛美

But where there are kings and judges, there will also be subjects,
servants, hangmen, soldiers, laborers, farmers, townspeople; where
there are young and old, there will be married people, children, and
household servants.

しかし王や裁判官がいる所には、臣下、下僕、絞首刑執行人、軍人、労働
者、農民、町民もいます。また青年や高齢者がいる所には既婚者、子供、
そして下僕などがいます。

All are honorable and good and show that their Creator is good.
Rightfully, all of creation should be nothing but a tongue, always
praising this great goodness of God.

すべての人は尊敬すべき存在であり、善良です。そして彼らの創造者は

If you want to know how good a thing is, then take whatever you will
and say: “If there were no fire …” or “If there were no sun…”; “If

The 147th psalm of thanks for various kindnesses and mighty works
of God---first, toward Israel and Jerusalem, then to all who thirst.

の詩篇です。

He gives rain and water to all creatures and does not the least little bird
go hungry, even the most useless raven. How much more then shall
He care for us, especially those who trust in His goodness and not in
human strength or horses?

神は雨と水をすべての生物に与えます。それで最も小さな鳥でさえ、最も
価値のない烏でさえ、飢えることはありません。それですから、私たちの

But above all, to Jerusalem, where His Word and His dwelling are, He

For Jerusalem and Israel have the advantage that they have God’s
Word and worship before all the nations; therefore, He has done

He will also be much more recognized there in the daily wonders such

These people cannot see any work or wonder of God, though they enjoy

The 146th psalm is a psalm of thanks. It teaches at the same time
that one should trust in God and not in princes, as the abominable
world, flesh, and blood do.

For God is the only one who can truly help in all kind of need, and He
helps so that it can really be called being helped.

The 145th psalm is a psalm of thanks for the kingdom of Christ,
which was to come.

詩篇第145篇は、来たるべきキリストの王国を望んで感謝する詩篇です。

It strongly urges the high, exalted work of praising God and glorifying
His power and kingdom.

この詩篇は、神を賛美し、神の力と王国の栄光を高らかに讃えることを
促します。

For Christ’s kingdom and power are hidden under the cross. If the cross
were not extolled through preaching, teaching, and confession, who
could have ever thought of it, to say nothing of knowing it?

なぜなら、キリストの王国と力は、十字架の下に隠されているからです。
もし十字架が説教、教え、そして告白によって讃えられなければ、そのこ

But such is His kingdom and power, that He aided the fallen, called

The 144th psalm is a psalm of thanks for kings and those in authority.

詩篇144篇は、王たちや権力者たちのためにする感謝の詩篇です。

David, a king who has to wage war and rule, gives thanks to God with
this psalm.

ダビデは王であり、戦争をし統治もしなければなりませんが、彼はこの詩
篇と共に、神に感謝します。

He confesses that victory, good fortune, and success---whether in
conflict or in government---are gifts of God and do not come from
human power and ability.

Little does human wisdom know how to keep subjects under authority
and to rule land and people well.

and passes away like a shadow.

discouraged and frightened hearts to the army and humble hearts

Where He thus touches the mountains and the multitudes, so that

Yet how can one, being only flesh and blood, bring about this fear?

For the people of Israel, having the renown of being the people of

covetous, jealous, and faithless, as indeed they showed by their

However, things do go badly for all the saints---for the reason that they
trust in God.

He calls them foreign children, for they want to be the foremost children

The 143rd psalm is a psalm of prayer. The psalmist prays for grace
and forgiveness of sins, in the terror of his conscience.

詩篇第143篇は祈りの詩篇です。詩人は恵みと、罪の赦しを求めて祈りま

He is nearly pressed to despair by the enemies of faith, that is, the
promoters of the Law.

These especially plague the distressed and timid conscience and drive
it into darkness, that is, into despair and death with heavy burdens
and unbearable doctrine of works, which they do not so much as touch

Of this all the ancient histories and works of the Lord also give
witness. For all of the holy patriarchs of old placed their hope on

The 142nd psalm is a psalm of prayer, as of one imprisoned under
the false teachers who forcefully push them away from the true faith
and life.

詩篇第142篇は祈りの詩篇です。偽りの教師の下で牢に入れられた人のもの

としました。

For among the people of Israel it was a commonplace occurrence
that the true prophets were persecuted and condemned on account
of the true worship and the Word of God.

All their histories show this, and Christ and St. Stephen also bear

The 141st psalm is a psalm of prayer. The psalmist prays that he
may be preserved from the ungodly teachers, who appear to be friendly
and speak with smooth words when threats do not work.

詩篇第141篇は祈りの詩篇です。詩人は、自分が不信心な教師たちから
守られるようにと祈ります。不信心な教師たちは、脅しが効かないとき
には、友人の振りをして、甘い言葉で話します。

It is better for me (he says) that righteous teachers rebuke me and
condemn my righteousness, than that the godless praise me.

And if, in the meantime, evil comes upon me and I suffer cross and
death and I am uprooted and torn apart, still it is better for me to
trust in the Lord.

その一方で、もし悪魔が私を襲い、私が十字架と死の苦しみを耐え、八つ
裂きにされても、それでも主を信頼する方が、私には好ましいのです。

Their hypocrisy will finally break their neck on a rock, that is, be
suddenly overthrown and come to an evil end.

彼らの偽善は終には破綻し、彼らは岩の上に落ちて、首を折るでしょう。
つまり突然投げ出されて、不幸な結果になるでしょう。

Then they will see how bitter is their sweet teaching and how precious
is my sour doctrine.

その時になって彼らの甘い教えがいかに苦く、また私の酸い教えがいかに
貴重であるかを知るでしょう。

Their own doctrine, in which they are caught as in a net, will bring
them down, while I pass by in safety.

彼らを罠に捕らえた彼ら自身の教えは、彼らを引き倒しますが、私は
安全に彼らの横を通り過ぎます。



(PRAYER　祈り)
Lord, God of Israel, in Your temple of old Your people according to
Your Law brought the offering of a lamb mornings and evenings, and
this was well pleasing to You when it was offered as a figure of that
Lamb which should come to save Israel from sin.

主よ、イスラエルの神よ、あなたの古い神殿では、あなたの民があ
なたの律法に基づいて、朝と夕に小羊の捧げものを持ってきました。
そしてそれがイスラエルをその罪から救うことになる雄羊の形とし
て捧げられる時には、それはあなたには非常に喜ばしいものでした。

For the sake of this Lamb, even Jesus Christ, let our sacrifice be
acceptable in Your sight, when night and morning we cry for the
remission of all our sins. Amen.

この子羊のために、さらにはイエス・キリストのためにも、私たちが私た
ちのすべての罪の赦しを求めて夜も朝も泣き叫ぶときに、その捧げものが
