It is not to think; it is not to work; it is to believe, simply to believe.
Belief makes one to think rightly, and to work righteously.

それは考えることではない。働くことではない。それは信じること、単純に信じることである。
信仰は人を正しく考えさせる。そして正しく働かせる。


“This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him whom He hath sent,” said the Lord and Saviour.
Verily so, verily so!

「神がお遣わしになった者を信じること、それが神の業である」(ヨハネ伝6章29節)と主は言われた。
確かにその通り、確かにその通りである。


No use of advertisement, no use of agitations; no use of “movements” and “drives”; ---
No use of enlisting men’s sympathies.

宣伝せず、煽動せず、「ムーブメント」も「ドライブ」もせず、
人々の同情を得ようともしない。


Belief, belief, as of a dutiful son in his father, ---
That is the highest wisdom, and the power that moves the universe.

信頼、従順な子が彼の父を信じるその信頼、
それこそが最高の知恵、宇宙を動かす力である。


Nothing is so simple as true religion; no use of theology and religious for it.
No need of monastery and self-immolation.
No need of searching heaven and earth for it.

真の宗教ほど単純なものはない。それには神学も宗教儀式も役に立たない。
僧院も苦行も必要ない。
そのために天地を探し求める必要もない。


“The word is nigh thee, in thy mouth, in thy heart, that is, the word of faith,” said Brother Paul.
The universe seems to be so constituted as to respond to the call of faith.

「『御言葉はあなたの近くにあり、あなたの口、あなたの心にある。』これはわたしたちが宣(の)べ伝えている信仰の言葉なのです。」(ロマ書10章8節)と兄弟パウロは言った。
宇宙は信仰の呼びかけに応えるように出来ているように思われる。


Belief --- it is not mysticism, it is a sane deliberate act, ---
Complete delivery of one’s whole self to the Father and Maker of the Universe, ---
An act to become entirely passive, and so be made wonderfully active.

信仰―――それは神秘主義ではない。それは健全で思慮のある行いである。
自分の全存在を父であり宇宙の創造者であるお方に完全に引き渡すことである。
全く受け身になり、その結果驚くほど行動的にされることである。
