神の召しと選び

　　　Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make
　　　your calling and election sure. For if you do these
　　　things, you will never fall.
　　　　　　2 Peter 1: 10

　　　ですから、兄弟たち。自分たちの召しと選びを確かな
　　　ものとするように、いっそう励みなさい。これらのこと
　　　を行っているなら、決してつまずくことはありません。
　　　　　　ペテロ後書1章10節

Although the calling Peter talks about here is strong enough by itself, it
doesn’t feel strong and firm enough to you. This is because you’re
not yet certain that it’s meant for you.

ここでペテロが語っている召(めし)はそれだけで十分に強いものですが、
あなたには、それは強くて確かなものに感じられません。それはペテロが
あなたに言っているものかどうか、あなたにはまだ確信がないからです。

So Peter wants to make this calling and election feel firmer with good
works.

それでペテロはこの召(めし)と選びが、良い業によって、より確かになる
ようにしたいと思っているのです。

Peter considers the fruit of faith to be very important. This fruit is
directed toward our neighbors in service to them. But the fruit doesn’t
remain outside of us.

ペテロは信仰の実が非常に重要だと考えています。この実は、私たちの
隣人たちへの奉仕によって、彼らに向けられています。しかし実は、私
たちの外部に留まっていません。

Faith is strengthened by the fruit so that we do more and more good
works. So this power is very different from physical strength.

信仰はこの実によって強くなり、私たちはますます多くの良い業をする
ようになります。それ故、この力は肉体的な力とは非常に異なっていま
す。

We get tired and injure ourselves if we overuse our physical strength.
But with spiritual power, the more we use it, the stronger it becomes.
And if we don’t exercise it, it diminishes.

私たちの肉体的力を使い過ぎれば、私たちは疲れ、自分の身を損ない
ます。しかし霊的な力は、私たちがそれを使えば使うほど、それは強く
なります。そしてもしそれを使わなければ、それは減っていきます。

We shouldn’t let faith rest. It becomes more powerful with cultivation
and practice until we become certain of our calling and election. We
become certain that we cannot fail.

私たちは信仰を休ませてはいけません。信仰は教化し、そして実践する
にしたがって、より力を増し、遂には私たちは自分の召(めし)と選びに
ついて確信するようになります。私たちは、失敗しないことを確信する
ようになります。

In addition, this passage gives us a guideline for dealing with election.
There are many frivolous spirits who don’t know what strong faith feels
like.

さらに、この節は私たちに選びの扱い方に関する指針を与えてくれます。
世には多くの軽薄な人たちがいます。彼らは強い信仰とはどのようなも
のか知りません。

They jump in, start at the top, and want to find out through their human
reason whether God has chosen them. They do this so that they can
feel certain of their position.

彼らは飛び入りし、首位でスタートし、彼らの人間理性によって、神は
彼らを選ばれたかどうかを探り出そうとします。彼らがそうするのは、
彼らの地位について確信を得たいからです。

We should quickly back away from this approach, because it’s not the
correct way. If we want to become certain, we must approach it the
way Peter suggests here.

私たちはこのような接近法から早急に離れなければなりません。何故な
らそれは正しくない方法だからです。もし私たちが確信をもちたいなら
私たちはペテロがここで示唆している方法で確信に近づかなければなり
ません。

If we choose a different way, we have already failed. But if we cultivate
and practice our faith over time, we will become certain so that we will
never stumble.

もし私たちが別の道を選ぶなら、私たちは既に失敗しているのです。しか
し私たちが信仰を時間をかけて養い、そして実践するならば、私たちは確
信に至り、決して躓くことはないでしょう。
